Final Quiz – Fire Safety in Class 2 to 9 Buildings for Architects
For architects, building designers and building surveyors

Fire Safety in Class 2 to 9 Buildings for Architects

The fire strategy is fixed on your plan and section long before the fire engineer checks it.

How fire safety in Class 2 to 9 buildings is settled by architectural decisions. The Type of construction from classification and rise in storeys, compartments and fire resistance levels, egress as geometry you can resolve at concept, the active services and the Performance Solution pathway with the fire safety engineer, then the NCC 2025 carpark reforms, external walls and the documentation that makes the strategy defensible.

Course content

4 modules, 2 case studies, final quiz and certificate.

Start 8 min

Introduction and objectives

Why fire safety is woven through the plan from the first massing study, and which NCC edition binds your project.

Module 1 12 min

Fire Resistance and Type of Construction

Work out the Type of construction from classification and rise in storeys, then set compartments, fire resistance levels and protected openings on the plan.

Module 2 11 min

Access and Egress

Resolve exit numbers, aggregate width, travel distance, fire isolated stairs and accessible egress while the massing is still fluid.

Module 3 14 min

Fire Services, Smoke and the Performance Pathway

Make room for hydrants, sprinklers and smoke control, and brief the fire safety engineer so the report matches the drawings.

Module 4 12 min

NCC 2025 Carparks, Documentation and Risk

Apply the carpark reforms, treat facade materials as a fire decision, and keep a fire safety schedule that survives an edition change.

Case studies 6 min

A carpark and an atrium

An open deck carpark caught by the NCC 2025 trigger, and a central atrium resolved by fire engineering.

Summary 3 min

Key takeaways

The decisions that are yours on the plan, and the record that proves them.

Final quiz and certificate

Ten project scenarios. Pass and the certificate goes straight into your dashboard.

Advanced. For architects who already design and document Class 2 to 9 buildings. Covers NCC Volume One Sections C, D and E, the Performance Solution pathway and the NCC 2025 carpark provisions, under both NCC 2022 and NCC 2025. It does not teach fire engineering analysis or replace the fire safety engineer, and houses under Volume Two are not covered.

Who it is for

Written for the people whose plans and sections decide how a building behaves in a fire.

Architects

You fix the Type of construction, the compartments and the exits when you set the form, long before anyone checks them.

1 formal CPD point

Building designers

You document compartment boundaries, fire resistance levels and egress paths that must survive into construction.

1 CPD point, with audit-ready records

Building surveyors

You decide whether a fire strategy is coherent, evidenced and assessed under the right edition.

1 hour of CPD

Fire safety engineers

Your report only holds if its assumptions match the building the architect actually documents.

1 hour of CPD

Licensed builders

You keep the rating of walls, floors and penetrations intact and build what the fire strategy assumed.

1 hour of CPD

If you are

How it is recorded

An architect

1 formal CPD point. Aligned with NSCA 2021 performance criteria PC12, PC41, PC45, PC46 and PC47.

A building designer

1 CPD point. Your certificate, the learning outcomes, the module outline and your quiz result are kept in your dashboard, so you can show what you studied if your CPD is audited.

A building surveyor, fire safety engineer or builder

1 hour of CPD on NCC Volume One fire safety, Sections C, D and E, recorded on your certificate for your registration body or state scheme.

CPD On Demand is not a registered training organisation and courses are not accredited by any registration body. Each course is aligned with the relevant competency frameworks and gives you the records to evidence it. CPD rules differ by registration body and state, so check with yours if you are unsure.

  • Analyse how the National Construction Code distributes fire safety across Sections C, D and E.
  • Determine the Type of construction from classification and rise in storeys, and the fire resistance levels that follow.
  • Evaluate compartmentation, the protection of openings and separation from fire source features.
  • Assess egress for alternative exits, aggregate width, travel distance and accessible paths of travel.
  • Apply smoke hazard management, fire services and emergency lighting requirements to the building section.
  • Integrate a Performance Solution, the NCC 2025 carpark provisions and the fire safety schedule into defensible documentation.

Questions

Before you enrol.

Yes. The course covers both editions. NCC 2025 is in force in Victoria and Western Australia, and the ACT allows either edition until it becomes mandatory on 1 May 2027. New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania stay on NCC 2022 until 1 May 2027, and the Northern Territory has set no date. The carpark provisions differ between the editions, so the course shows how to plan for the edition that will apply when your project is certified.

Start, stop and finish later. Progress is saved and the course stays in your dashboard.

Yes, on passing the final quiz. It is stored in your dashboard alongside your other CPD records.

No. It covers Class 2 to 9 buildings under NCC Volume One. Houses and other Class 1 buildings sit under Volume Two and the Housing Provisions, and are not covered here.

Yes. Team packs start at $579 for six courses shared across your practice.

No. Every course is product neutral. No sprinkler, cladding or fire rated system brands, no sponsor, no sales pitch at the end.
