Final Quiz – Designing for Net-Positive Buildings
For architects, building designers and energy assessors

Designing for Net-Positive Buildings

Net zero is the minimum now. Design the building that exports a surplus and still gets approved.

Net zero balances a building’s energy account. Net positive designs it to give a surplus back to the grid and the community. Size solar PV and batteries for surplus, integrate rainwater and greywater reuse, design for grid export and precinct microgrids, then take non-standard systems through the Performance Solution pathway and make the financial case with life cycle costing.

Course content

4 modules with a multi-residential case study, final quiz and certificate.

Start 7 min

Introduction and objectives

What a net-positive building is, how it moves past net zero, and the policy context that makes it a live brief now.

Module 1 10 min

Net-Zero vs Net-Positive Design

Use energy use intensity, operational and embodied energy and whole-of-life carbon to show where net zero stops and net positive begins.

Module 2 15 min

Renewable Energy and Water Reuse Strategies

Size solar PV for surplus, plan battery space, and integrate rainwater and greywater reuse, tested on a multi-residential case study.

Module 3 12 min

Designing for Surplus and Community Contribution

Design for load shifting and grid export, precinct microgrids, and shared systems such as EV charging and hot water loops.

Module 4 10 min

Regulatory & Financial Frameworks

Take non-standard systems through the Performance Solution and evidence of suitability pathways, and back them with life cycle cost and return on investment.

Summary 3 min

Key takeaways

The benefits of net-positive design for you, your client and the community, and the next steps for your practice.

Final quiz and certificate

Ten questions on metrics, surplus design, water reuse and the approval pathway. Pass and the certificate goes straight into your dashboard.

Intermediate. For architects and building designers who already work with NatHERS, Whole-of-Home and NCC compliance. Covers net-zero and net-positive metrics, solar PV, battery and water reuse design, grid export and precinct systems, and the Performance Solution and funding frameworks, taught to NCC 2022. It does not size systems for a particular site, and it is not financial advice.

Who it is for

Written for the people who decide what a building gives back.

Architects

Your clients ask for more than net zero, and you need to show how the building will give back.

1 formal CPD point

Building Designers

You document the PV, battery and water reuse systems that make a surplus possible.

1 CPD point, with audit-ready records

Energy Assessors

You model Whole-of-Home performance and get asked what it takes to push a design past zero.

1 hour of CPD

Engineers

You size the energy and water systems that have to deliver the surplus the design promised.

1 hour of CPD

Urban Planners

You plan precincts where shared microgrids, EV charging and water reuse serve many buildings.

1 hour of CPD
How it counts

Where this hour goes on your record.

National Standard of Competency for Architects (NSCA 2021) performance criteria this course aligns with:

PC10

Whole life carbon of materials and systems

PC20

Budget and timeframe against codes and objectives

PC31

Energy, water and carbon over the lifecycle

PC33

Integrating sustainable environmental systems

PC45

Materials and systems chosen for performance and carbon

If you are

How it is recorded

A building designer

1 CPD point in energy and sustainability. Your certificate, the learning outcomes, the module outline and your quiz result are kept in your dashboard, so you can show what you studied if your CPD is audited.

An architect

1 formal CPD point. Aligned with NSCA 2021 performance criteria PC10, PC20, PC31, PC33 and PC45.

An energy assessor, engineer or urban planner

1 hour of CPD on net-positive design, recorded on your certificate for your professional body or your own records.

CPD On Demand is not a registered training organisation and courses are not accredited by any registration body. Each course is aligned with the relevant competency frameworks and gives you the records to evidence it. CPD rules differ by registration body and state, so check with yours if you are unsure.

  • Differentiate between net-zero and net-positive building design strategies and their performance outcomes.
  • Design buildings capable of generating and exporting surplus energy to support broader community needs.
  • Integrate renewable energy systems and water reuse solutions into architectural designs effectively.
  • Navigate NCC 2022 compliance pathways, including performance solutions and evidence of suitability requirements.
  • Apply key performance metrics such as Energy Use Intensity and whole-of-life carbon in decision-making.
  • Evaluate financial and regulatory frameworks to support the delivery of net-positive building projects.

Questions

Before you enrol.

NCC 2022. Victoria adopted NCC 2025 on 1 May 2026. Western Australia and the ACT allow either edition until 1 May 2027, although an ACT building approval after 1 November 2026 must use NCC 2025 unless the development application was lodged first. New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania and South Australia’s Building Code stay on NCC 2022 until 1 May 2027, and the Northern Territory has set no date. South Australia’s Plumbing Code, which covers water reuse, moved to NCC 2025 on 1 May 2026. The net-positive design principles hold whichever edition governs your project, but confirm the clauses with your building authority.

Start, stop and finish later. Progress is saved and the course stays in your dashboard.

Yes, on passing the final quiz. It is stored in your dashboard alongside your other CPD records.

No. It introduces whole-of-life carbon and energy use intensity as design metrics, then concentrates on operational surplus: renewable energy, battery storage, water reuse, grid export and the approval pathway. A full life cycle assessment method is outside its scope.

Yes. Team packs start at $579 for six courses shared across your practice.

No. Every course is product neutral. No solar panel, battery, inverter or water treatment brands, no sponsor, no sales pitch at the end.
