AI & Machine Learning in Building Performance Optimisation

AI is already in the energy model. Can you defend its output when your name is on the report?

Where AI and machine learning genuinely add value to building performance work, and where the risk sits. How AI-driven simulation, digital twins and predictive maintenance fit NatHERS, NABERS and the NCC verification pathways, the data governance and cybersecurity duties they bring, and a framework to select, validate and document AI tools in your advice.

Course content

4 modules, 2 case studies, final quiz and certificate.

Start 6 min

Introduction and objectives

Why AI integration is now a professional capability question for anyone who signs off performance advice.

Module 1 11 min

AI and Machine Learning Fundamentals for Building Performance

Know what AI and machine learning actually do in buildings, the main model types, and how sensor data feeds simulation and forecasting.

Module 2 11 min

Compliance Frameworks, Digital Twins, and Predictive Systems

Place digital twins and predictive maintenance within NatHERS, NABERS and the NCC, and know what evidence an AI-assisted assessment needs.

Module 3 13 min

Implementation Challenges, Data Governance, and Risk

Manage data quality, ownership and bias, cybersecurity duties, procurement, and the failure modes when AI gets it wrong.

Module 4 12 min

Practice Application, Documentation, and Future Readiness

Apply a decision framework to choose AI tools, bring their outputs into reports, and document your method so it stands up to review.

Case studies 5 min

An office precinct and a net-zero development

An AI-optimised commercial office precinct in Melbourne, and machine learning in a net-zero residential development.

Summary 2 min

Key takeaways

The four objectives drawn into one practice framework for your next assessment.

Final quiz and certificate

Ten questions on AI methods, compliance, risk and documentation. Pass and the certificate goes straight into your dashboard.

Advanced. Assumes a strong working knowledge of NatHERS, NABERS, energy modelling and performance-based compliance. Covers AI and machine learning methods, digital twins, predictive maintenance, data governance, cybersecurity and how to document AI-assisted advice. It teaches you to evaluate and use AI tools, not to program them, and it is not legal advice.

Who it is for

Written for the people who sign off building performance advice.

Sustainability Consultants

You put your name on performance advice, and AI tools are starting to shape what goes into it.

1 hour of CPD

Building Designers

You test design options with early modelling and need to know when an AI shortcut can be trusted.

1 CPD point, with audit-ready records

Energy Assessors

You model energy performance and get asked whether predictive tools can speed up the work.

1 hour of CPD

NatHERS Assessors

The rating still comes from the NatHERS software, and you need to know where AI optimisation fits before it.

1 hour of CPD

Building Surveyors

You assess compliance evidence and will see AI-assisted modelling in Performance Solution reports.

How it counts

Where this hour goes on your record.

National Standard of Competency for Architects (NSCA 2021) performance criteria this course aligns with:

PC10

Whole life carbon of materials and systems

PC12

Advice to building codes and standards

PC28

Building and environmental science in design

PC31

Energy, water and carbon over the lifecycle

PC33

Integrating sustainable environmental systems

If you are

How it is recorded

A building designer

1 CPD point in building performance and sustainable design. Your certificate, the learning outcomes, the module outline and your quiz result are kept in your dashboard, so you can show what you studied if your CPD is audited.

An architect

1 formal CPD point. Aligned with NSCA 2021 performance criteria PC10, PC12, PC28, PC31 and PC33.

A sustainability consultant, energy or NatHERS assessor, or building surveyor

1 hour of CPD on AI in building performance, recorded on your certificate for your professional body or your own records.

CPD On Demand is not a registered training organisation and courses are not accredited by any registration body. Each course is aligned with the relevant competency frameworks and gives you the records to evidence it. CPD rules differ by registration body and state, so check with yours if you are unsure.

  • Analyse how AI and machine learning tools are applied in building performance modelling, energy simulation, and operational optimisation.
  • Assess the suitability of AI tools for use in sustainability consulting and compliance sensitive advisory practice.
  • Evaluate the role of digital twins and predictive maintenance systems within NatHERS, NABERS, and NCC compliance frameworks.
  • Apply structured methodologies for validating, documenting, and communicating AI assisted analysis in professional reports and assessments.
  • Identify the data governance, cybersecurity, and implementation risks associated with AI integrated building systems.
  • Develop practical strategies for integrating AI driven insights into building performance optimisation and long term operational decision making.

Questions

Before you enrol.

Both, because the edition depends on where the project is. Victoria adopted NCC 2025 on 1 May 2026. Western Australia and the ACT allow either edition until 1 May 2027, although an ACT building approval after 1 November 2026 must use NCC 2025 unless the development application was lodged first. New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania and South Australia’s Building Code stay on NCC 2022 until 1 May 2027, and the Northern Territory has set no date.

Start, stop and finish later. Progress is saved and the course stays in your dashboard.

Yes, on passing the final quiz. It is stored in your dashboard alongside your other CPD records.

No. It assumes a working knowledge of NatHERS, NABERS and performance-based assessment, not programming. It teaches you to evaluate, validate and document AI tools in your advice, not to build them.

Yes. Team packs start at $579 for six courses shared across your practice.

No. Every course is product neutral. Where a simulation engine is named it illustrates a method, never a recommendation. No sponsor, no sales pitch at the end.

Use AI where it adds value, and document it so your advice stands up, in one self-paced hour.
