What Changed in the NatHERS Technical Note

Four revisions since 2022, and the change log does not list every change.

The assumptions assessors must update. Find out which Technical Note version binds a rating, compare the thermal shell and Whole of Home rules that moved between the 2022 version and version 20241023, and bring your templates, certificates and procedures up to date before the next audit finds them.

Course content

4 modules, 2 case studies, final quiz and certificate.

Start 3 min

Introduction and objectives

Why the small table changes are the dangerous ones, why the change log is a summary rather than a list, and the four things you will be able to do by the end.

Module 1 11 min

How the Technical Note Changes, and Why It Binds You

Why the Technical Note outranks every other guide, how versions follow engines, which version applies to a revision, and how to keep your own change register.

Module 2 13 min

The Thermal Shell Assumptions That Moved

Climate zone selection, bathroom and laundry zoning, floor coverings and void formers, garages and Class 1b, the new downlight default and the thermal bridging rewrite.

Module 3 11 min

The Whole of Home Assumptions That Moved

Appliance documentation, two heaters in one zone, hot water certificates, the Class 2 centralised heat pump proxy and the revised pool pump defaults.

Module 4 11 min

Updating Your Practice

Preliminary and final certificates, a dated audit of your templates, revisions and older certificates, and a routine ready for the version NatHERS has already signalled.

Case studies 5 min

Case Studies

A downlight template left over from 2022, and two heaters in one living room modelled under a rule that had already reversed.

Summary 2 min

Summary and Key Takeaways

The six changes and habits to carry into your next rating and your next template audit.

Finish

Final quiz and certificate

Ten project scenarios. Pass and the certificate goes straight into your dashboard.

Intermediate. For accredited assessors who already rate Class 1 and Class 2 dwellings in regulation mode, and the designers, architects, surveyors and consultants who rely on their certificates. Covers the status of the Technical Note, the four revisions since the September 2022 version, the thermal shell and Whole of Home assumptions that changed, and how to update templates, certificates and procedures. It teaches no software operation, names no products, and does not replace the current NatHERS Technical Note.

Who it is for

Written for the people who produce, rely on and check the rating.

Energy Assessors

Your template was built in 2022, and the default it still applies may have been superseded twice since.

1 hour of technical CPD

Building Designers

Lighting plans, floor finishes and appliance schedules in the documents keep a rating off the worst case defaults.

1 CPD point, with audit-ready records

Architects

Know when a certificate is only preliminary, and why a revision after permit normally uses the latest version.

1 formal CPD point

Building Surveyors

A final certificate belongs on documents marked for construction, and its notes should say which defaults it used.

1 hour of CPD

Sustainability Consultants

Whole of Home results now turn on which heater is modelled, the heat pump proxy and the pool pump default.

If you are

How it is recorded

An energy assessor

1 hour of technical CPD on the status and versions of the NatHERS Technical Note, the thermal shell and Whole of Home assumptions that changed since 2022, and updating templates and certificates. Your certificate, the learning outcomes, the module outline and your quiz result are kept in your dashboard for your accrediting organisation’s records.

An architect

1 formal CPD point. Aligned with NSCA 2021 performance criteria PC1, PC12, PC31, PC46 and PC55.

A building designer, surveyor or sustainability consultant

1 hour of CPD on NatHERS Technical Note requirements, preliminary and final certificates and the documentation a rating relies on, recorded on your certificate for your registration body or state scheme.

CPD On Demand is not a registered training organisation and courses are not accredited by any registration body. Each course is aligned with the relevant competency frameworks and gives you the records to evidence it. CPD rules differ by registration body and state, so check with yours if you are unsure.

  • Explain why the NatHERS Technical Note prevails over the Handbook, software manuals and other guidance, and how it binds through the software licence and accreditation.
  • Identify which Technical Note version applies to a new rating or a revision after permit, including the narrow written regulator exception.
  • Compare the thermal shell assumptions that changed since 2022, from climate zone selection and wet area zoning to floor coverings, downlights and thermal bridging.
  • Apply the revised Whole of Home rules for appliance documentation, two heaters in one zone, hot water certificates, the Class 2 heat pump proxy and pool pumps.
  • Issue preliminary and final certificates correctly and record the defaults and versions used in the additional notes.
  • Audit and date your templates, libraries and standard notes against each new version, using a change register built from the clauses rather than the change log.

Questions

Before you enrol.

Yes. Version 20241023 of the Technical Note applies to software using Chenath 3.22 and 3.23, both designed for NCC 2022, and NatHERS has advised that NCC 2025 makes no major residential energy efficiency changes. Victoria and Western Australia adopted NCC 2025 on 1 May 2026. The ACT commenced it the same day with either edition available until it becomes mandatory on 1 May 2027. New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania apply NCC 2022 until 1 May 2027, and the Northern Territory has not adopted NCC 2025. Confirm the edition that applies to your project with your state or territory authority.

Start, stop and finish later. Progress is saved and the course stays in your dashboard.

Yes, on passing the final quiz. It is stored in your dashboard alongside your other CPD records.

No. It works from the published Technical Note versions, compared clause by clause, so it applies whichever accredited tool you use. It does not replace the current NatHERS Technical Note, and it tells you where to check for the next version.
