What to Expect From a NatHERS Audit

When the audit notice arrives, your files have to answer for every input and assumption.

What a NatHERS audit is for, how assessors are selected, and what happens from notification to the final outcome. See the documents and modelling patterns auditors look at, the triggers that raise your chance of selection, and how to keep files, respond in writing and remediate, so an audit becomes a quality check rather than a crisis.

The roles of the assessor and the accrediting organisation, why audit readiness matters, and the six things you will be able to do by the end.

Module 1 10 min

The Purpose and Framework of TPA and AAO Audits

See where audits sit in the NatHERS framework, what they rest on, and why they check assessment quality rather than punish.

Module 2 10 min

The Audit Lifecycle: From Notification to Final Outcome

Know how assessors are selected, what each stage asks of you, the timeframes, when to ask for an extension, and how outcomes are decided.

Module 3 10 min

What Auditors Look For: Documentation and Accuracy

Check your certificate, project files, plans and notes against what an auditor reviews, and avoid the documentation errors that recur.

Module 4 10 min

Audit Triggers and Risk Indicators

Recognise the unusual loads, rating anomalies, unjustified defaults, omissions and complaints that make a file more likely to be selected.

Module 5 10 min

Preparing and Responding Professionally

Build an internal file checklist, keep assumptions traceable, retain records as the Technical Note requires, and write a clear response.

Module 6 5 min

Reducing Audit Stress and Understanding Expectations

Separate what you are responsible for from what you are not, and approach an audit with confidence rather than dread.

Finish 5 min

Summary and key takeaways, final quiz and certificate

The actions for audit readiness, then ten questions. Pass and the certificate goes straight into your dashboard.

Beginner to intermediate. For accredited NatHERS assessors, and the consultants who work with them, who want to know what an audit involves before one arrives. Covers the purpose of audits, the audit lifecycle, the documents reviewed, common triggers and how to prepare and respond. It does not replace your accrediting organisation’s own audit procedures or the NatHERS Technical Note.

Who it is for

Written for the people whose files an auditor will open.

Energy Assessors

You sign every certificate, and an audit asks you to show how each input was reached.

Questions

Before you enrol.

No. Audits are run under the NatHERS scheme by your accrediting organisation, and the process is the same in every state and territory. The course refers to NCC 2022 Volume Two, which still applies in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania until 1 May 2027 and in the Northern Territory. Victoria and Western Australia adopted NCC 2025 on 1 May 2026 and the ACT commenced it the same day, so cite the edition that applies to each project in your file.

Start, stop and finish later. Progress is saved and the course stays in your dashboard.

Yes, on passing the final quiz. It is stored in your dashboard alongside your other CPD records.

It sets out the typical process, the documents reviewed and the common triggers. Your accrediting organisation’s own procedures and notices govern your audit, so read them alongside the course.
