Glazing Inputs, WERS and Default Values

Most window errors in a rating start in the documents, not the software.

Getting the window entry right without the software. Read the schedule and the supplier sheet for the glazing inputs a rating actually needs, choose between the custom and default libraries the Technical Note allows, work the awkward windows by hand, and follow the certificate to site, where it becomes the builder’s window specification.

4 modules, 2 case studies, final quiz and certificate.

Start 3 min

Introduction and objectives

Why windows move a rating more than almost any other input, why most window errors start in the documents, and the four things you will be able to do by the end.

Module 1 11 min

Reading the Window Schedule Before the Software

Take whole of window values, frame and glazing type, opening style and size from the schedule, refuse centre of glass figures, and ask in writing when the schedule is silent.

Module 2 11 min

Default or Custom: Choosing the Library

Use the three routes the Technical Note allows, read a custom window code, and apply the substitution rule for the library your software is actually in.

Module 3 12 min

The Awkward Windows

Model glazed doors, combination units, restricted bedroom openings, obscure glass, garage openings, screens and glazed balconies, with the arithmetic done before the entry.

Module 4 11 min

From Certificate to Site

Read the certificate as the builder does, stamp the schedules, check a supplier quote by hand, and know when a window change needs a new assessment.

Case studies 5 min

Case Studies

A quote built on glass values and bedroom restrictors nobody modelled, traced from the schedule to the fix.

Summary 2 min

Summary and Key Takeaways

The six habits to carry into the next window schedule that lands on your desk.

Finish

Final quiz and certificate

Ten project scenarios. Pass and the certificate goes straight into your dashboard.

Intermediate. For assessors who already rate Class 1 houses in regulation mode, and the designers, architects, builders and surveyors who specify, supply or check the windows. Covers the window schedule, whole of window values on the Australian Fenestration Rating Council protocols, the three permitted window libraries and their substitution rules, the awkward window cases, the certificate’s window table and changes on site. It teaches no software operation, names no products, and does not replace the NatHERS Technical Note.

Who it is for

Written for the people who choose, specify and check the windows.

Energy Assessors

The schedule lists glass but not frames, and the supplier sheet quotes a U-value you are not allowed to use.

1 hour of technical CPD

Building Designers

A window schedule that names the frame, the glass and the opening style is the cheapest rating improvement there is.

1 CPD point, with audit-ready records

Architects

Glazing choices made by orientation and climate early are the ones the certificate can actually match.

1 formal CPD point

Licensed Builders

The certificate is your window specification, and a cheaper quote has to sit inside its U-value and SHGC limits.

1 hour of CPD

Building Surveyors

The stamped window schedule and the additional notes are what let you check the windows installed against the windows rated.

How it is recorded

An energy assessor

1 hour of technical CPD on the NatHERS Technical Note window requirements, the permitted window libraries and substitution rules, and window documentation. Your certificate, the learning outcomes, the module outline and your quiz result are kept in your dashboard for your accrediting organisation’s records.

An architect

1 formal CPD point. Aligned with NSCA 2021 performance criteria PC12, PC28, PC31, PC45 and PC46.

A building designer, builder or surveyor

1 hour of CPD on window specification, NatHERS window inputs and checking installed windows against the certificate, recorded on your certificate for your registration body or state scheme.

CPD On Demand is not a registered training organisation and courses are not accredited by any registration body. Each course is aligned with the relevant competency frameworks and gives you the records to evidence it. CPD rules differ by registration body and state, so check with yours if you are unsure.

  • Interpret a window schedule and supplier data to extract the whole of window values, frame and glazing type, opening style and size a rating needs.
  • Distinguish whole of window Uw and SHGCw values on the Australian protocol from centre of glass and glass only figures that are not valid inputs.
  • Apply the Technical Note rules for choosing a custom, WERSlink default or NatHERS default window, and for substituting a window that is not in the library.
  • Calculate and model the awkward windows, including combination units, glazed doors, restricted openings, obscure glass and garage openings.
  • Record every default, substitution and assumption in the additional notes and stamp the window schedules so a reviewer can reconstruct each entry.
  • Manage window changes from certificate to site, checking a supplier quote against the certificate’s maximum U-value and SHGC range.

When the Spec Doesn’t Say Enough

Questions

Before you enrol.

Yes. The window requirements come from the NatHERS Technical Note, which applies on either edition, and NCC 2022 carries an equivalent openable window protection provision. Victoria and Western Australia adopted NCC 2025 on 1 May 2026. The ACT commenced it the same day with either edition available until it becomes mandatory on 1 May 2027. New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania apply NCC 2022 until 1 May 2027, and the Northern Territory has not adopted NCC 2025. Confirm the edition that applies to your project with your state or territory authority.

Start, stop and finish later. Progress is saved and the course stays in your dashboard.

Yes, on passing the final quiz. It is stored in your dashboard alongside your other CPD records.

No. Everything is done with the window schedule, the Technical Note and a calculator, so it applies whichever accredited tool you use. It explains which window libraries different software versions carry, and it does not replace the NatHERS Technical Note.

Yes. Team packs start at $579 for six courses shared across your practice.

No. Every course is product neutral. No window, glass or software brands, no sponsor, no sales pitch at the end.
