Blower Door Testing for NatHERS Assessors

A blower door result changes nothing on your certificate, and almost everything about the build.

Reading the result and using it in the rating. Read a test report before you trust its number, see how a regulation mode rating calculates its own air leakage from the components you enter, compare the two on the same scale without overclaiming, and use the result at design, documentation and completion, with the ventilation question a tight house raises.

4 modules, 2 case studies, final quiz and certificate.

Start 3 min

Introduction and objectives

Why a test result changes the rating not at all directly and a great deal indirectly, and the four things you will be able to do by the end.

Module 1 11 min

What a Blower Door Actually Measures

Read the metric, the preparation method and the construction stage before the number, and keep fifty pascals apart from natural infiltration.

Module 2 11 min

How the Rating Models Air Leakage

See which of your inputs move the modelled leakage, what the Technical Note defaults assume, and why a measured result cannot go into a regulation rating today.

Module 3 12 min

Reading the Result Against the Model

Put the test and the model on the same scale, trace a leakier result to the build and a tighter one to the ventilation question, and keep the certificate clean.

Module 4 11 min

Using the Test Across the Project

Advise at design stage, write a target the builder can price, check the completion test against the rated house, and explain the number to the client.

Case studies 5 min

Case Studies

A very tight house with no fresh air plan, and a downlight schedule nobody updated, read result by result.

Summary 2 min

Summary and Key Takeaways

The six habits to carry into the next test report that lands on your desk.

Finish

Final quiz and certificate

Ten project scenarios. Pass and the certificate goes straight into your dashboard.

Intermediate. For assessors who already rate Class 1 houses in regulation mode, and the builders, designers, surveyors and services engineers who commission or read a blower door test. Covers the test method and its metrics, the NatHERS treatment of air leakage, Part 13.4 building sealing, the NCC Verification Methods that use a test, the comparison with the model and the advice that follows. It teaches no software operation, names no products, and does not replace the NatHERS Technical Note or AS/NZS ISO 9972.

Who it is for

Written for the people who have to say what a test result means.

Energy Assessors

The report lands on your desk unasked, and the client wants to know what it did to the stars.

1 hour of technical CPD

Licensed Builders

A completion test is the first independent check that the sealing in the documents was actually built.

1 hour of CPD

Building Designers

An airtightness target only works when the specification states the figure, the metric, the standard and the stage.

1 CPD point, with audit-ready records

Building Surveyors

The Verification Methods that use a test sit outside the certificate, and a result of five or below brings a ventilation requirement with it.

1 hour of CPD

HVAC and Building Services Engineers

A very tight house needs designed fresh air, and the rating will never raise that question for anyone.

1 hour of CPD
How it counts

Where this hour goes on your record.

National Standard of Competency for Architects (NSCA 2021) performance criteria this course aligns with:

PC12

Building codes, standards and planning advice

PC28

Building science in conceptual design

PC33

Sustainable environmental systems

PC45

Materials and performance standards

PC56

Defects, rectifications and substitutions

If you are

How it is recorded

An energy assessor

1 hour of technical CPD on the NatHERS Technical Note, building sealing and the reading of blower door test evidence. Your certificate, the learning outcomes, the module outline and your quiz result are kept in your dashboard for your accrediting organisation’s records.

An architect

1 formal CPD point. Aligned with NSCA 2021 performance criteria PC12, PC28, PC33, PC45 and PC56.

A builder, building designer, surveyor or services engineer

1 hour of CPD on airtightness testing, building sealing and NatHERS documentation practice, recorded on your certificate for your registration body or state scheme.

CPD On Demand is not a registered training organisation and courses are not accredited by any registration body. Each course is aligned with the relevant competency frameworks and gives you the records to evidence it. CPD rules differ by registration body and state, so check with yours if you are unsure.

  • Interpret a blower door test report, including the reference pressure, the metric, the preparation method and the construction stage it describes.
  • Distinguish air permeability from air changes per hour at fifty pascals, and convert between them only when the report gives the area and volume it used.
  • Explain how a NatHERS regulation mode rating calculates air leakage from the leakage sources, exposure category and Technical Note defaults you enter.
  • Analyse a test result against the modelled building on the same scale, and identify whether a mismatch points to the build, the model or the geometry.
  • Apply the ventilation requirement of the NCC building sealing Verification Method where a result is five or below, and advise on a fresh air strategy.
  • Use a test result at design, documentation and completion stage, and write the advice and the specification target that keep the certificate and the build consistent.

Questions

Before you enrol.

Yes. The building sealing Verification Method and the Part 13.4 sealing provisions exist in both NCC 2022 and NCC 2025, and the NatHERS treatment of air leakage is the same on either edition. Victoria and Western Australia adopted NCC 2025 on 1 May 2026. The ACT commenced it the same day with either edition available until it becomes mandatory on 1 May 2027. New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania apply NCC 2022 until 1 May 2027, and the Northern Territory has not adopted NCC 2025. Confirm the edition that applies to your project with your state or territory authority.

Start, stop and finish later. Progress is saved and the course stays in your dashboard.

Yes, on passing the final quiz. It is stored in your dashboard alongside your other CPD records.

No. The course is about reading the report a tester produces and using it alongside a regulation mode rating. It teaches no software operation and no test procedure beyond what you need to read a report critically, and it does not replace AS/NZS ISO 9972 or the NatHERS Technical Note.
