AI and Computational Design in Architecture

AI can test a hundred design options by lunch, but your name still goes on the one you sign.

A practical guide to using AI and computational design in Australian practice. Tell the tools apart, set up generative design to explore concept massing against real site and planning constraints, test thermal, daylight and energy performance while the design can still change, and use the results as evidence for NCC performance-based compliance. Transparency, data governance and professional accountability stay where they belong: with you.

Start 7 min

Introduction and objectives

Why AI and computational design now matter in Australian practice, and how they connect to the NCC’s performance-based structure.

Module 1 10 min

AI and Computational Design Fundamentals for Built Environment Professionals

Tell AI from computational design, place rule-based, parametric and machine learning tools in your workflow, and link them to NCC Performance Requirements.

Module 2 15 min

Generative Design for Concept Exploration

Turn site, planning and environmental constraints into parameters, generate massing options and weigh solar access, overshadowing and buildability.

Module 3 15 min

AI-Driven Simulation and Design Efficiency Evaluation

Test thermal, daylight and energy performance early, and use the outputs to inform NatHERS, whole-of-home and Section J strategies and Performance Solutions.

Module 4 10 min

Ethics, Governance, and Professional Responsibility in AI-Enabled Design

Keep algorithms and assumptions transparent, check data for bias, own every AI output you sign and settle who owns the models.

Summary 3 min

Key takeaways

How AI supports your judgement rather than replacing it, and the first practical steps into a compliant workflow.

Final quiz and certificate

Ten questions on tools, generative design, simulation and professional responsibility. Pass and the certificate goes straight into your dashboard.

Advanced. For architects, designers and engineers who already work with digital design tools and want to use AI and computational methods with rigour. Covers tool types, generative design, AI-assisted performance simulation, and governance and accountability. It teaches methods, not a software platform, and it does not replace a NatHERS assessment or any NCC verification method.

Who it is for

Written for the people who sign off on what the software suggests.

Architects

Your team already uses parametric tools, and you need to know which AI outputs you can stand behind.

1 formal CPD point

Building designers

You want to test more concept options early without losing control of the design or its compliance.

1 CPD point, with audit-ready records

Sustainability / energy modellers (NatHERS-aligned)

Options often reach you late; early simulation lets you shape the envelope before it is fixed.

1 hour of CPD

Building services / building performance engineers

You run the simulations, and everyone who relies on them needs the assumptions, inputs and limits made clear.

1 hour of CPD

Building surveyors / certifiers

You assess Performance Solutions that increasingly rest on modelling you did not run.

1 hour of CPD
How it counts

Where this hour goes on your record.

National Standard of Competency for Architects (NSCA 2021) performance criteria this course aligns with:

PC20

Budget and timeframe against codes and planning

PC28

Building science to optimise the concept

PC31

Sustainability information across the lifecycle

PC33

Integrating thermal, lighting and other systems

PC45

Performance standards and whole life carbon

If you are

How it is recorded

An architect

1 formal CPD point in design technology and building performance. Aligned with NSCA 2021 performance criteria PC20, PC28, PC31, PC33 and PC45.

A building designer

1 CPD point in design practice and technology. Your certificate, the learning outcomes, the module outline and your quiz result are kept in your dashboard, so you can show what you studied if your CPD is audited.

An energy modeller, performance engineer, surveyor or certifier

1 hour of CPD on AI-assisted design, simulation and compliance evidence, recorded on your certificate for your professional body or your own records.

CPD On Demand is not a registered training organisation and courses are not accredited by any registration body. Each course is aligned with the relevant competency frameworks and gives you the records to evidence it. CPD rules differ by registration body and state, so check with yours if you are unsure.

  • Identify key artificial intelligence and computational design tools used in architectural and building design workflows.
  • Evaluate building performance using AI assisted simulation methods for thermal, daylight, and energy analysis.
  • Explain the differences between computational design, parametric modelling, and artificial intelligence in the built environment.
  • Understand how digital design tools support evidence based compliance with the National Construction Code and NatHERS.
  • Apply generative design principles to explore multiple design options during early concept development.
  • Recognise ethical, professional, and regulatory responsibilities when using AI assisted tools in architectural practice.

Pairs well with.

Architects

Designing for Net-Zero Embodied Carbon: Practical Strategies

Simulation shows how a design performs; this is the carbon it costs to build.

Architects

Integrating Daylight and Electric Lighting Systems

The daylight modelling from Module 3, carried through to the lighting design.

Architects

Ethics for Architects in Practice

The accountability in Module 4, applied to every document and certificate you sign.

Questions

Before you enrol.

The course works with the NCC’s performance-based structure: Performance Requirements, Performance Solutions and verification methods, which run through both NCC 2022 and NCC 2025. NCC 2025 is in force in Victoria; Western Australia and the ACT have adopted it with either edition allowed until 1 May 2027. New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania stay on NCC 2022 for building work until 1 May 2027, and the Northern Territory has set no date. Confirm the edition that applies to your project.

Start, stop and finish later. Progress is saved and the course stays in your dashboard.

Yes, on passing the final quiz. It is stored in your dashboard alongside your other CPD records.

No. The course teaches tool types and methods, not a platform. The skill it builds is structuring the problem: variables, constraints, objectives and the evidence you will need, so you can brief or check the people running the models.

Yes. Team packs start at $579 for six courses shared across your practice.

No. Every course is product neutral. No software brands, no sponsor, no sales pitch at the end.

Use AI to test more options earlier and still stand behind every result you sign, in one self-paced hour.
