The course “Fire Safety Basics: Understanding Passive & Active Systems” is designed to provide an overview of essential fire safety principles in buildings. It covers the differences between passive fire protection (PFP)—which helps contain fire and smoke through fire-rated walls, doors, and compartments—and active fire protection (AFP), which includes detection and suppression systems like sprinklers and alarms. The course aligns with the National Construction Code (NCC) requirements, explaining Fire Resistance Levels (FRL), evacuation safety measures, and compliance pathways.
Participants will also explore common fire safety materials such as fireproof sealants, gypsum boards, and intumescent coatings, as well as how to properly apply active suppression systems. By the end of the course, learners will understand how both passive and active fire protection must work together to enhance fire safety and compliance in Australian buildings.
