Fire Safety in Residential Design

Most fire safety RFIs are not design failures but documentation gaps, like an undetailed penetration.

Understanding passive and active systems for design documentation and coordination. How fire-rated walls, floors and active systems work together in Class 1 and Class 2 buildings, what NCC 2022 asks for fire resistance levels, separation and egress, where drawings usually fall short, and how to coordinate with the fire engineer and the certifier before you submit.

60 minutes, self-paced Intermediate level 1 formal CPD point Certificate on completion National, taught to NCC 2022

Course content

4 modules, 2 case studies, final quiz and certificate.

Start 5 min

Introduction and objectives

Why fire safety compliance fails at the documentation stage, and the four objectives for the hour.

Module 1 11 min

Passive and Active Fire Safety Systems in Residential Design

Tell passive from active protection, and see where each one changes the plan, the section and the services layout.

Module 2 12 min

NCC 2022 Fire Safety Provisions for Residential Buildings

Read the FRL requirements, apply separation and compartmentation in Class 2, and plan egress paths and exits that comply.

Module 3 15 min

Identifying and Resolving Fire Safety Compliance Gaps in Design Documentation

Close the usual gaps in fire-rated walls, floors and ceilings, service penetrations and egress details before certification.

Module 4 12 min

Fire Safety Coordination, Documentation, and Certifier Communication

Set scope boundaries with the fire engineer, record design assumptions and document the Performance Solution interfaces.

Case studies 5 min

An apartment building and an attached dwelling

Separation and penetration gaps in a Class 2 building, and egress and FRL documentation in a Class 1 attached home.

Summary 2 min

Key takeaways

The documentation checks to run before your next residential set goes to the certifier.

Final quiz and certificate

Ten questions on fire safety systems, NCC 2022 provisions, documentation gaps and coordination. Pass and the certificate goes straight into your dashboard.

Intermediate. For architects and building designers who document Class 1 and Class 2 buildings and coordinate with fire engineers. Covers passive and active systems, the NCC 2022 fire provisions, documentation gaps and coordination. It does not teach fire engineering methods or Performance Solution design.

Who it is for

Written for the people whose drawings carry the fire safety strategy.

Architects

You turn the fire engineer’s strategy into walls, floors and details the certifier can check.

1 formal CPD point

Building designers

You document attached homes and small apartment buildings where one missing rating note triggers an RFI.

1 CPD point, with audit-ready records

Building surveyors

You assess FRL systems, egress and penetrations, and need drawings that match the fire engineering report.

1 hour of CPD

Fire safety engineers

Your strategy only holds if the architectural set records the assumptions and boundaries you set.

1 hour of CPD

Residential builders

You install fire-rated assemblies and seal penetrations from the drawings, so gaps there become defects on site.

If you are

How it is recorded

A building designer

1 CPD point in fire safety documentation and coordination. Your certificate, the learning outcomes, the module outline and your quiz result are kept in your dashboard, so you can show what you studied if your CPD is audited.

An architect

1 formal CPD point. Aligned with NSCA 2021 performance criteria PC12, PC39, PC45, PC46 and PC47.

A building surveyor, fire safety engineer or builder

1 hour of CPD on residential fire safety documentation under NCC 2022, recorded on your certificate for your registration body or state scheme.

CPD On Demand is not a registered training organisation and courses are not accredited by any registration body. Each course is aligned with the relevant competency frameworks and gives you the records to evidence it. CPD rules differ by registration body and state, so check with yours if you are unsure.

  • Explain the roles and differences between passive and active fire safety systems in residential buildings.
  • Assess architectural documentation to detect common fire safety compliance gaps, including penetrations, fire-rated assemblies, and egress details.
  • Interpret key NCC 2022 fire safety provisions that apply to Class 1 and Class 2 residential design.
  • Apply strategies to coordinate fire safety requirements with fire engineers, services consultants, and other project stakeholders.
  • Identify fire resistance level (FRL) requirements and apply them correctly to walls, floors, and other building elements.
  • Prepare clear and complete fire safety documentation that supports efficient certifier review and regulatory approval.

Questions

Before you enrol.

NCC 2022, which is still in force in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory. NCC 2025 is in force in Victoria, and in Western Australia, which allows the 2022 edition until 30 April 2027. The ACT allows either edition until 1 May 2027, but a building approval after 1 November 2026 must use NCC 2025 unless the development application was lodged before then. The course notes where NCC 2025 is heading on fire safety; confirm the edition for each project with your building authority.

Yes, on passing the final quiz. It is stored in your dashboard alongside your other CPD records.

No. It covers what the designer documents and coordinates. Fire engineering methods and Performance Solution design stay with the fire safety engineer; the course shows how to record their strategy and where your scope ends.
